Topic: The Great Depression

Standards:

H.9.0 Students understand that the Great Depression was a significant event in American history and life changed during this time period. (Taken from S.S. Standards Bozeman Public Schools)

Brief Description: Students will learn about the Great Depression and show their understanding of this economic downfall with comics.

Know Before You Start: Students should have some knowledge of the Great Depression before completing this activity.

Hook:

  • Read the sample comic and Discuss the Great Depression. What were its causes? What were the effects?

  • List student answers on the board.

  • If time allows, have students conduct additional online research on its causes and effects. Add this additional research to the board.

Activity:

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a comic of 10 or more panels to tell the story of the Great Depression and Black Tuesday. 

  • In the comic they  should explain 4 causes of Black Tuesday with dialogue.

  •  Remind students to use backgrounds that are appropriate and add to the story being told.

  • Grade on appropriateness of backgrounds chosen, use of expressions and dialogue.

Closure:

  • Have students share their finished comics with a partner or with the whole class.

  • Display printed comics on a classroom bulletin board… great for Open House!

Differentiation:

  • Students can work independently, in groups, or with a partner.

  • Allow students to use speech-to-text feature as needed.

  • Provide printout of the sample comic for student reference.
