Brief Description: Students will learn restaurant dialogue through the creation of a comic.

Know Before You Start: Though the sample comic is in French, this activity can be adapted to any language. It may help to push your desks together “Class Restaurant” style and have menus to role play with. These can be found at restaurant sites online.

Hook:

  • Discuss restaurants.

    • What are some things we may hear in a restaurant?

    • What kind of questions will be asked?

  • Have students role play being at a restaurant using only the language being studied.

Activity:

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a comic that takes place in a restaurant. 

  • Each student should place themselves in the comic as either a waiter or customer.

  • Remind students to use restaurant dialogue throughout.

Closure:

  • Have students share their comics with a partner or with the class.
  • Have students show their finished comics and read them aloud.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use speech-to-text feature as needed.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
  • Students can work independently, in groups, or with a partner.

  • Provide printout of the sample comic for student reference.

  • Have restaurant phrases on the board in the language you are learning e.g., "May I take your order?" or "I’ll have a hamburger please."
