Grade Level: 7, 8, 9

Brief Description: After learning how to greet people the language being taught, students will read a sample conversation comic and make a “Greetings” comic of their own.

Know Before You Start: This simple comic can be used as an introduction to greetings in a world language or given as a review with follow up questions.

Hook:

  • Read and discuss the sample comic. Do the student and teacher know each other well? What greetings are used in this comic?

  • Model these greetings in the language being taught? (i.e. Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese etc.)

  • Introduce or review greetings in other settings. Meeting someone during school lunch, starting a new job, meeting a new teammate etc.

  • Have students pair up and practice introducing themselves to their partners in the language being taught.

Activity: Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a comic in which they introduce themselves to another character in the language of the course...

  • Be sure to have each character use a greeting and a question.

  • Be creative. Feel free to change the setting of the comic or add more characters. Think about how that might change the conversation.

  • Make the facial expressions and actions match the conversation.

Closure:

  • Have students share their finished comics with a partner or with the class.

  • The comic could grow throughout a unit or term as students learn more skills. The possibilities are endless!

Differentiation:

  • Students can work independently, in groups, or with a partner.

  • Allow students to use speech-to-text feature as needed.

  • Provide printout of the sample comic for student reference.
