Subject: ELA (English Language Arts)
Lesson Length: 30 - 45 mins
Grade Level: 4
Standards / Framework:
Brief Description: Students will deepen their understanding of current vocabulary terms by exploring antonyms.
Know Before You Start:
Students will need a basic understanding of antonyms prior to starting the lesson.
Prior to the lesson, choose 3-5 selected vocabulary terms from current lessons. The terms must be words that have opposites.
Read and discuss Comic 1 with the class. How does the comic demonstrate the word ancient and the word modern, its opposite? How does recognizing the antonym of a word help us better understand the meaning of a word?
Share Comic 2 with the class.
Ask students to think of words and their antonyms and share with a partner.
Use 3-5 key vocabulary terms from a current lesson.
Using the sample comics as a guide, have students create a 2 panel comic to illustrate their understanding of the vocabulary term and its opposite meaning for each vocabulary word.
2 Panels: Vocabulary Word & Antonym.
Closure: Display the created vocabulary and antonym comics as a quick review.
Pre-Teach the concept of opposites as needed.
Allow students to use speech-to-text feature as needed.
