Hook:

  • Discuss the parts of the human brain and their functions.

Activity:

  • Out loud or on paper, have students answer the questions found in the sample comic. (Answers below.)

  • When finished, have them create a comic to explain how that part of their brain supports them in their learning. 

  • Optional Activity: Print the comic to create brain terminology flash cards.

ANSWERS: 

  • Panel 1: Regulates our reactions and emotions, it’s where our “primal brain” lives.
  • Panel 2: Stores and process memories and important facts.
  • Panel 3: Helps us focus, decide, analyze and reason.
  • Panel 4: Sends messages from your spinal cord and brain to help body functions.
  • Panel 5: Neurons send information throughout our brain; they help us form habits, beliefs and mindsets.

Closure:

  • Ask students to reflect on why knowing the parts of our brain and their roles are important for us as social and emotional learners, especially as we grow.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Print out flashcards for students and pre-teach definitions and functions.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
