Subject: Math

Lesson Length: 35 - 45 mins

Topic: Expressions and Equations

Grade Level: 6

Standards / Framework:

Brief Description: In this lesson, students will learn to write and evaluate matching expressions and exponential form involving whole-number exponents.

Know Before You Start: Students should be familiar with simple whole-number exponents.

Hook:

  • Read and discuss the sample comic. Solve each expression.

Activity:

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a four-panel “Exponent” comic.
    • Panel 1: Students will present an expression of a whole-number exponent and its exponential form.
    • Panel 2: Students will provide the answer for the expression.
    • Panel 3: Students will present a second expression of a whole-number exponent and its exponential form.
    • Panel 4: Students will provide the answer for the expression.

Closure:

  • Have students share their comics with the class and explain how they solved each expression.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or groups as needed.
  • Allow students to use a calculator or multiplication chart.
  • Adjust the level of difficulty based on student needs.

Resources:

  • Comic to print or display
  • Calculators to check work, if permitted
