Know Before You Start: Students should have some understanding of cause and effect. At least two informational texts about a topic will be needed for students to read and analyze.

Hook:

  • Read and discuss the sample comic. 

    • How did the oil spill cause the effect?

  • Share an informational text passage with students and model examples of cause and effect within the passage.

Activity:

  • Provide students with a second informational text and ask them to read with a partner. 

  • Have students find examples of cause and effect within the text. 

  • Have students create a two-panel comic demonstrating their understanding of cause and effect based on the text.

Closure:

  • Discuss the cause and effect examples with students.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Provide a list of common cause and effect signal words.

  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
