Brief Description: In this lesson, students will imagine an invention that would solve a problem at home or at school e.g., completing chores, losing items around the house, being able to focus on homework, an improved lunchbox or backpack, carrying heavy materials for class, etc.

Know Before You Start: It helps to review the STEM challenge process with students before the lesson; identify the problem, brainstorm solutions, formulate a plan, construct your solution/design, test your solution, reflect, and iterate/make changes.

Hook: Read and discuss the sample comic. Discuss how the character invented something to solve an everyday problem that they were having.


  • Have students brainstorm a list of everyday problems that they face at home and at school.

  • Next, have students think of an invention that can solve this problem.

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have them create a six-to-eight-panel comic including the following:

    • The problem.

    • Brainstorm solutions.

    • Formulate a plan.

    • Construct.

    • Test, reflect, & iterate (make changes).

Closure: Have students will share their inventions with a partner.


  • Provide a print out of a blank six-to-eight-panel comic with expectations as a reference.

  • Allow students to work with a peer model.

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature as needed.

  • Provide sentence frames as needed.


  • Comic to print or display: Comic.
