Brief Description: Students will create a comic using transition words to convey sequence.

Know Before You Start: This lesson will give students an opportunity to use transition words. This can be an introductory lesson or a quick review.

Hook:

  • Read and discuss the sample comic.

    • What’s happening?

    • Which words are used to provide sequence and put things in order in the comic? 

  • Highlight the transition words used in the sample comic. 

  • Discuss the importance of transition words. 

  • Generate a list of transition words or phrases used in writing to help the reader understand sequence or shifts in time or setting.

Activity:

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a comic of their daily routine. The comic should:

    • Use transition words effectively.

    • Include at least four panels.

  • It’s helpful to have a list of transition words posted in the classroom during this activity.

Closure:

  • Have students peer edit each other’s comics and provide feedback about the transition words used in the comics.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Print out the sample comic for students to highlight transition words.

  • Provide transition words for student reference.

  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
