Lesson Length: 15 - 20 mins

Topic: STEM; Coding

Grade Level: 4, 5

Standards / Framework:

Brief Description: In this lesson, students will demonstrate their knowledge of key coding vocabulary.

Know Before You Start: Students should be familiar with some of the key coding vocabulary.

Hook:

  • Read and discuss the sample comic. Can students identify the coding term being referred to?

Activity:

  • Students will have a choice of key coding vocabulary words to define, e.g., command, algorithm, loop, bug, debug.

  • Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a three-panel comic featuring three vocabulary words of their choice.

  • In each panel students can define the coding term, or phrase it as a question, like the sample comic.

Closure:

  • Students will share their favorite word comic panel with a partner.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or groups as needed.
