Subject: World Languages
Lesson Length: 45 mins - 1 hour
Topic: Science, Communication, Animals
Brief Description: Students will explain and reflect on the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.
Know Before You Start: Students should be able to identify animal names in English and the target language.
Hook:
- Ask students:
- “What is your favorite animal?”
- “Why should we learn about animal names in other languages?”
- “What are some animal names that are similar in different languages?”
Activity:
- As a class, have students practice animal names in the target language.
- Have students research and share their favorite animal’s name in the target language.
- Have students choose several animals to write about in the comic.
- Using the sample comic as a guide, have students create a comic that portrays several comparisons of animal names.
Closure:
- Have students share their comics with the class or in small groups.
- Have students explain why they chose the animals featured in their comic.
- Discuss why it’s important to be able to talk about animals in a different language.
- Emphasize that sometimes when we’re learning languages, words might be very similar or very different across languages.
Differentiation:
- Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
- Allow students to work in pairs or groups as needed.
- Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
- Students may not have a favorite animal; encourage them to think of an animal someone else hasn’t suggested yet.
- Allow students to use digital dictionaries/translators as appropriate for your class policy.
