Subject: Social Studies

Lesson Length: 1 - 2 hours

Topic: Civics: Processes, Rules, and Laws

Grade Level: 1, 2

Standards / Framework:

Brief Description: Students will showcase one of their school rules and its importance.

Know Before You Start: Students should be familiar with their school and classroom rules.

Hook:

  • Ask students:
    • “Why do we have rules?”
    • “What are some consequences students face if they do not follow the rules?”
    • “If you were the principal or a teacher, what rule would you create?”

Activity:

  • Students will complete the “Know” section of a KWL chart on chart paper about school rules in a whole group setting.
  • Teachers will explain the school-wide rules to students.
  • Students will generate questions for the “Want to Learn” section of the KWL chart about the rules.
  • Teachers will ask school leadership to come in to be part of the lesson. Students will ask school leaders the questions they generated about school rules and their importance.
  • Students will select one of the school rules and create a comic that illustrates the rule and explains its importance.

Closure:

  • Have students share their comics with a partner or in small groups.
  • Have students independently write or draw on a post-it what they learned from the lesson. Tape the post-its onto the KWL anchor chart in the “Learn” section.
  • Consider posting all of the comics on a bulletin board for the rest of the school to benefit from.
  • Tell students that today's comics highlight the most important school rules. Creating these comics helps keep them safe and understand school expectations.

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or groups as needed.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
  • Provide students with a graphic organizer, such as Draw/Plan Then Write, to map out their comic before creating.
