Subject: Math, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

Lesson Length: 1 - 2 hours

Topic: Geometry: Reason with shapes and their attributes.

Grade Level: 3, 4, 5

Standards / Framework:

Brief Description: Students will be able to show the attributes of different quadrilaterals.

Know Before You Start: Students should be familiar with different types of polygons and vocabulary terms such as equal, parallel, perpendicular, sides, and angles.

Hook:

  • Display several shapes.
  • Ask students:
    • “What is the shape?”
    • “How do we classify and define types of quadrilaterals?”

Activity:

  • Review key vocabulary terms such as polygon, equal, parallel, perpendicular, sides, and angles. Explain that these vocabulary words are used to describe the attributes of shapes.
  • Show students the Math Antics’ Quadrilaterals YouTube video. Stop at several parts of the video to further explain concepts and provide time for students to take notes about each shape’s different attributes.
  • Have students create a comic that illustrates one quadrilateral and one other shape as characters. The characters will talk to one another about their attributes.

Closure:

  • Have students share their comics in pairs or small groups, or through a gallery walk.
  • Remind students of the attributes of different quadrilaterals.
  • Explain that there are jobs which use geometry, such as architects, engineers, graphic designers, video game designers, and many more!

Differentiation:

  • Allow students to use the speech-to-text feature.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or groups as needed.
  • Allow students to use the voiceover feature to read their comics aloud.
  • Provide students with a vocabulary chart that describes different attributes of shapes, e.g., parallel, right angle, etc.
  • Provide students with a graphic organizer, such as Draw/Plan Then Write, to map out their comic before creating.
