Class instructions: Have students decompose 822 as a sum of so many hundreds, so many tens, and so many ones using objects, pictorial models, and numbers.
Teacher instructions: This is a great way to make sure students are using mathematical discourse so students are learning from each other. Assign students a partner, give an appropriate amount of time for partner work, then have students come back to the group to share what they've learned. As teacher, highlight any discourse that will strengthen student understanding of the task.
